Beautiful Reproductions of Paintings of Dance and Dancers
Dance and dancers provide subject matter for a variety of creative people such as painters, sculptors, designers and song writers to name but a few. Painters give us a static representaion of dancers who are three dimensional and moving in space. The artist whether portraying an actual person or not adds his own way of "seeing" and tells us something about him/herself at the same time.An artist will use various media such as watercolor, oils, pen and ink, charcoal etc to set down his or her personal vision. There can be a posed model in the studio or the artist can relie completely on imagination or go off into complete abstraction as he or she wishes. Some of the earliest art that we have shows people dancing. It is clear that the artist had motivations which went beyond the aesthetic.Cave art from early prehistoric times onwards bears witness to the power of the dance. The paintings and engravings occur worldwide. In the western part of Arnhem Land in Australia a cave painting shows two men playing instruments to accompany the dance. A rock shelter at Cogul near Lenda in Catalonia, Spain portrays a group of nine women. They are wearing knee length skirts and are dancing round a small naked male figure. The State of Madhya Pradash in India has abundant rock art depicting dancers and musicians.
